How to Prepare Your Business for Reopening in the Pandemic

One of the defining characteristics of the Covid-19 pandemic has been confusion. It’s understandable. This early in the research phase of a new virus, how can we expect the medical community to get everything right? They’re studying and learning as fast as they can to help all of us.

Safely Welcoming Workers & Customers Back

When reopening businesses, you should first look to your state’s reopening guidance. Once assured that your business is eligible, look at current procedures to see how they can be safer. For example, a retail store could add contactless payment options.

Social distancing for businesses isn’t just placing the tape on the floor near a cash register to indicate a six-foot distance. The one-way aisles we see in grocery stores can also work in many office hallways, depending on the layout.

Face shields can be worn in areas when plexiglass partitions are unavailable or just not possible, such as hair salons and barber shops. Consider moving workstations to minimize contact between employees if partitions aren’t available.

At business entrances, use an infrared temperature sensor for employee and customer temperature checks before allowing them to enter. While a lack of a fever doesn’t guarantee a lack of Covid-19, it decreases the chance that the person is positive.

Use disinfectants to regularly wipe down surfaces and equipment in common areas, like restrooms and break rooms. Also disinfect frequently handled things like door handles.

While washing your hands is more effective, there are times you don’t have immediate access to a sink. Provide hand sanitizer for workers and customers. Demand has subsided a bit and it’s now easier to source than it was at the start of the pandemic, but in a pinch, you can make your own.

Personal Protective Equipment

Business owners are required to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to employees. The most common PPEs, of course, are disposable masks and gloves.

To be effective, masks should be worn so both your nose and mouth are covered. While most masks alone won’t prevent infection, if two people both wear masks, the added layer of prevention further lowers the risk of transmission.

Gloves should be replaced frequently – touching an infected item, then touching your face can transmit viruses like Covid-19 and the flu.
